O’Duffy Abú – a new play by Castleblayney Players

O’Duffy Abú is a new play about the Irish revolutionary Eoin O’Duffy (1890-1944) who was born near Castleblayney. He was a prominent figure in the GAA, an IRA leader during the War of Independence, becoming a Sinn Féin TD in 1921. He took the Pro-Treaty side with Michael Collins, was Chief of Staff of the National Army in the Irish Civil War and was appointed Garda Commissioner. He is probably best known for his controversial involvement in the fascist movement of the 1930s when he became leader of the Blueshirts and was appointed first leader of Fine Gael. He brought an Irish Brigade to Spain to fight for the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War.

This play was written by the late, and much missed, Aidan McQuillan, a founder member of Castleblayney Players. Though the play was unfinished before Aidan’s passing, his friend Brian Kenny, with whom Aidan had collaborated on “And a Red Flag Flying” in 2019, worked on the script to bring it to the stage.

As well as some familiar faces, we are delighted to introduce new local actors to the stage. The play is directed by Kevin McGeough who has previously researched and written about those turbulent times when Ireland fought for independence.

Thanks to Deirdriú McQuaid, County Librarian & Head of Cultural Services, Monaghan County Council, and the Department of Culture, Communications & Sport for their invaluable support.
