Monaghan’s great Eugene ‘Nudie’ Hughes dies aged 67

Legendary Monaghan and Castleblayney Faughts footballer Eugene ‘Nudie’ Hughes has died at the age of 67.

He won three All-Stars in 1979, 1985, and 1989. Considered by many to be Monaghan’s greatest footballer, Hughes was one of only a small number of players to have been recognised in defence and attack; his first coming as a corner-back with the others coming as a corner-forward.

In 2024, Hughes was honoured by the Gaelic Players Association with a Lifetime Achievement award.

In addition to his prowess on the football field Nudie was also talented in other sports which included playing soccer in his younger days and more recently could be found on the local golf course.
