John McGough’s Great Grand Niece to Officiate at unique Race

A great grand-niece of local hero The Runner McGough has accepted an invitation from the author of the Runner McGough book to travel from Scotland next weekend to officiate at a special inaugural John McGough Mile race.  Donna Mullin who’s great grandmother Ellen was a sister of the famous athlete will be also accompanied on the trip from Scotland by her dad and partner.

Ellen McGough was the only one of John’s six siblings to marry.  She in fact had been sent home from Glasgow to Tattygar outside the town of Castleblayney to be reared with her widowed grandfather Francis Markey when she was three years of age.  She later married George McNally a postman in Oghill, Doohamlet, in 1913, but sadly died during childbirth in 1926.  Their youngest daughter Bridie was Donna’s grandmother.

The race which is being co organised by Blackhill GFC and the author of the Runner McGough book Tommy McGuire will cover the distance that John McGough excelled in, which is the Mile race.

Registration for the race will take place in the Blackhill GFC centre at 6.30pm on Friday 3rd May.  The race will be run in categories at different intervals with prizes for the winner in each category and a medal for all participants.  Entry fee on the evening is €5 and refreshment will be served after the races.
