Mindzenty Finnegan Receives National Recognition

Hearties congrats to our modern day local hero Minzenty Finnegan, who has rightly been awarded a silver award in the All Ireland Community and Council Awards in Dublin at the weekend.

Mindzenty swapped his working gear for a tuxedo and along with other community activists Pat Merick and Martin Leonard travelled to the awards in stylish attire.

The following write up by Carol Lambe of Monaghan County Council, who nominated Mindzenty for the award gives an excellent account of Mindzenty’s incredible achievement.

Congratulations to Mindzenty Finnegan, one of Castleblayney’s finest, who on Saturday night was awarded a Silver Community Volunteer of the Year award at the 2019 All Ireland Community & Council Awards, sponsored by LAMA and IPB Insurance. Mindzenty was nominated by Monaghan County Council in recognition of his singlehandedly reclaiming an area of Council wasteground and developing it into a mini soccer pitch, on which he has held countless tournaments for the local children. Not content to stop there, he and the local Tidy Towns committee developed the remainder of the site a beautiful park, which Mindzenty lovingly maintains with his trusty wheelbarrow. Mindzenty is a familiar sight to walkers around Lough Muckno’s Black Island, where last autumn he was unmasked as the hero behind the mysterious `clearing of the leaves` off miles of paths – all by hand. If ever you’re in doubt about what one person with an idea and a lot of determination can achieve, take a wee spin down to Mindzenty Park, hidden behind the houses of Lakeview on the right hand side as you head out the Keady road from Castleblayney!
