“The Runner McGough” Medals unearthed after 110 Years

A Historic discovery has been made in London by a Castleblayney man in the unearthing of four medals won by Co. Monaghan man almost 110 years ago, including a 1908 Olympic Game’s medal.

The medals had turned up for sale in a London Auction House and have been acquired by a local Castleblayney native Tommy McGuire who has ironically been researching the medal winner’s story.

The four medals had been won by John McGough known locally as the Runner McGough, who in addition to incredible athletic feats in Scotland at the beginning of the 19th Century is also linked to the formation of the Blackhill GFC as well as helping Cavan win two All-Ireland Championships in 1947 and 1948.

The new owner of these historic medals local man Tommy McGuire who is Manager of The Enterprise Centre in Castleblayney, has the permission of the Board of Castleblayney Community Enterprise, who along with the Chairperson Marese Heavin have been very supportive of his endeavours to create a display in the Enterprise Centre, where they will be on show on a daily basis to the general public.
