Castleblayney’s iconic Market House building to receive 11 Million towards refurbishment

There was great news for Castleblayney this week with the news that Castleblayney Market House building is to receive funding of 11m to progress to the next stage of development.

The funding which was announced by Monaghan based Minister Heather Humphreys TD will go towards the refurbishment and repurposing of the former Castleblayney Market House a protected structure and landmark building in the historic centre of Castleblayney into a public facility providing cultural, retail, hospitality, office uses and associated ancillary spaces. Works will include new floors, internal walls, stairs and lift within the existing building, a new roof top events space and open-air viewing deck, the provision of solar PV panels at roof level along the southern elevation and the restoration of the bell tower.

The Market House refurbishment and public realm enhancements under this proposal will sit contiguous with the recently completed Gate Lodge public library and public realm enhancements to create a wonderful pedestrian friendly public gathering space that will provide endless opportunities that can be attributed to having a functional people-centric town centre square, that supports the commercial activities and economic opportunities of the town. These may include the opportunity to enjoy town centre living, recreation, entertainment and to promote and grow the town’s cultural and creative expression. The transformation of the Market Square and the opportunities it presents will allow for recreational and cultural opportunities on a regional scale.
